‌Why Are Seeds Pelletized?

Seed pelletization is an advanced agricultural processing technique that coats seeds with protective materials to enhance their performance. This process serves multiple purposes:

First, the uniform coating improves seed shape and size consistency, enabling precision mechanical sowing.

Second, the protective layer often contains fungicides or insecticides to shield young plants from soil-borne diseases and pests.

Third, pelletized seeds gain better weight and density, preventing wind dispersal while improving germination rates through moisture retention. The clay-based coating may also include nutrients like fertilizers or growth promoters to nourish seedlings during early development stages. Additionally, brightly colored pelletization helps distinguish different seed varieties and prevents counterfeiting.

Particularly for small or irregularly shaped seeds (like carrots or lettuce), pelletization standardizes their dimensions for automated planting equipment. The technology also allows the integration of beneficial microorganisms into the coating.

Modern pelletization uses biodegradable materials that dissolve upon watering, causing no soil pollution. This processing method has become indispensable in modern precision agriculture, significantly increasing crop yields while reducing labor costs and chemical usage.
